A Paraben Free Face Moisturizer - Do You Know What Preservative The Manufacturer Uses?

By Gordon P Hall

Before you buy a paraben free face moisturizer, take the time to find out what kind of preservative the manufacturer does use. It's an important thing to know.

Preservative free moisturizers are not available, because the products would have no shelf-life. They would need to be used immediately. A person who wanted to avoid preservatives completely would need to mix their own lotions, which can be done, but isn't the most popular alternative.

Luckily, there is a safe, natural and effective preservative. It is natural vitamin E. Note the word "natural" before the word vitamin. Not all vitamins are natural, that is derived from foods.

Some vitamins are created synthetically in the laboratory. According to some estimates, over 75% of the vitamin E on the market is made synthetically using petrochemicals. The process is similar to the way that plastics are made. So, just because you see vitamin E on the label of a paraben free face moisturizer does not necessarily mean you are safe.

Actually, you won't see vitamin E listed on a label of cosmetic ingredients, but you often see the words "with vitamin E!" on the front labeling. Companies are required to use the INCI or International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients on the back. Tocopheryl Acetate is the name that you should see on the back.

In addition to being an effective preservative, Tocopheryl Acetate provides other benefits relevant to the skin's health and appearance. It is even better than tocopherol, which is the form of vitamin E you would be getting if you rubbed olive oil on your skin, for example. Who knew there were so many different forms of a single vitamin?

One advantage of Tocopheryl acetate over tocopherol is that the acetate form provides a longer shelf life. The tocopherol in a bottle of olive oil is more readily broken down by light. Something you might not be aware of is that olive oil actually has a pretty short shelf life, unless it is kept in a dark cool environment; not out on the table at room temperature.

Another advantage of a paraben free face moisturizer containing Tocopheryl acetate is that the compound is not oxidized. It retains all of its antioxidant activity. It can penetrate into the deepest layers of the skin where it can actually be regenerated and provide some protection against the sun's UV rays. UV rays of sunlight are a major cause of skin aging.

Those are only a couple advantages of a paraben free face moisturizer preserved with Tocopheryl Acetate. Look for it by name.
